The Council of Europe on Thursday told
Rome to improve mental health provision for prison inmates in
order to curb a recent wave of suicides in Italian jails.
The Italian authorities must improve measures to prevent
suicides in prison, which "in 2022 reached an unprecedented
level", and "continue efforts to ensure sufficient capacity of
Rems", the alternative residences for prisoners suffering from
mental disorders, demanded the Council of Europe's Committee of
Ministers.
The committee's recommendations came after it this week examined
the actions taken by Italy to respond adequately to two
condemnations on the situation in prisons handed down by the
European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
Prison rights' groups say chronic overcrowding has contributed
to the recent wave of suicides.
