Finance police have uncovered
large-scale labour exploitation at Venice's shipyards, with
almost 2,000 workers hired without legal contracts.
Most of the workers in question were from Bangladesh or Eastern
Europe, according to the investigation coordinated by Venice
prosecutors in collaboration with the national labour
inspectorate.
They were underpaid and in many cases had none of the rights
guaranteed by national collective labour contracts.
Particularly alarming is the case of 383 workers who, due to
their extreme situation of need, were forced to work for less
than seven euros an hour.
