Pope Francis stressed that water
"must be preserved for our benefit and that of future
generations" in his message for World Water Day on Wednesday.
"Water must never be the object of waste or abuse, or provide
the grounds for war," the Argentine pontiff said.
He also referred to the three-day United Nations Water Summit,
which opens in New York on Wednesday.
The UN has warned that a global water crisis is looming, with
the imminent risk of shortages due to overconsumption and
climate change.
"I pray for the success of the work and hope that the important
event will accelerate initiatives in favour of those who suffer
from the scarcity of water, this primary good," Francis said in
relation to the conference.
