(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 17 - Construction of a bridge between
mainland Italy and Sicily across the Strait of Messina will
create tens of thousands of jobs and mark the rebirth of the
country's steel industry, Minister for Business and Made in
Italy Adolfo Urso said on Friday.
The project "means tens of thousands of direct jobs, but above
all it means to some extent the rebirth of the Italian iron and
steel industry", Urso said at the Euro-Mediterranean Festival of
the Economy (Feuromed) in Naples .
On Thursday Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet approved a decree
paving the way for the construction of the bridge, which has
been under consideration by several governments but has never
gone beyond the planning stage for varoious reasons including
cost, safety and environmental concerns and fears of potential
Mafia involvement. (ANSA).
