Rome prosecutors said Tuesday that
they have opened an investigation to determine whether a huge
wildfire that broke out in the north of Rome on Monday was
caused by arson.
It is the latest in a series of recent wildfires in and around
Rome and comes just days after a huge blaze in the Massimina
district that caused considerable damage.
Monday's fire took hold in the Pineto park and Monte Ciocci
nature reserve, giving off a big cloud of smoke behind St
Peter's Basilica, and generating a strong smell and showers of
ash in the centre of the capital and zones including Nomentana,
Talenti, Pineta Sacchetti and Balduina.
Several homes and a sports centre had to be evacuated on Monday
because of the blaze.
