Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said
Monday that he feared international grain shortages following
Russia's blockage of Ukraine's ports could trigger new wars in
other parts of the world.
"There are devastating effects (of the Ukraine war), such as the
grain (shortage), such as the food emergency," Di Maio said
during a visit to Naples.
"Here we have the risk of new wars breaking out thousands of
kilometres away from Ukraine because Russia is blocking the
export of grain from Ukrainian ports with its Navy ships".
He said Italy was taking action to counter the threat of a food
crisis.
"We are working with initiatives involving all the countries of
the Mediterranean, our partners and the United Nations
agencies," he said.
"This week we will host an important dialogue event with all the
countries of the Mediterranean to find solutions to prevent a
food crisis causing greater migrant flows to Italy".
