Campania's environmental agency is
seeking to recruit a group "smell sleuths" to help it get to the
source of the strong smells that have been polluting the air of
some parts of the southern region for several years.
The "odour examiners" will be paid to do three-hour sessions to
assess samples of air collected in the affected areas and help a
special olfactometry laboratory in Caserta.
Many zones affected by the smells are in the so-called 'Land of
Fires' area in the provinces of Naples and Caserta, where
criminal organisations have dumped and burned trash and toxic
waste for decades.
