The Vatican on Friday cleared Polish
Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz of negligence in failing to report
child sex abuse when he was Archbishop of Krakow from 2005 to
2016.
The Holy See has decided to take no further action against the
prelate after a probe conducted by Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco,
the former head of the Italian Bishops Conference (CEI), the
papal nunciature in Poland announced.
Dziwisz, the longtime former secretary of Saint John Paul II,
had been accused of covering up clerical sex abuse in his
position as Krakow archbishop.
Last June the Vatican set up a commission led by Bagnasco to
look at allegations of cover-ups by abuse victims.
Dziwisz, who turns 83 next week, himself urged the commission to
be set up to examine what he called "calumny".
The commission was set up in the wake of a Polish TV documentary
that caused concern.
Dziwisz expressed gratitude to the Holy See Friday saying the
charges were "without merit".
