Migrant arrivals in Italy doubled in
2021, the Astalli Centre for migrants said Tuesday.
Some 67,040 migrants arrived in Italy by sea last year compared
to 34,154 in 2020, it said.
Unaccompanied migrant minors were 9,478 in 20221, up from 4,687
in 2020.
Some two thirds of migrants are still being hosted in the
extraordinary reception centres (CAS), designed to handle large
flows, said the Astalli Centre.
The 'diffuse reception system' (SAI), with smaller numbers and
more targeted intervention goals, only has around 25,000 people
out of 76,000 present in authorised facilities.
Sexual abuse and torture of women on migrant routes went up last
year, the centre added.
"Almost all the women seen by the gynaecological service, 213 in
2021, underwent torture, gender violence or abuse in their
countries of origin or during their journeys," it said.
Italian red tape was continuing to constrict migrants' rights,
the report added.
