President Sergio Mattarella had talks with members of Premier Giuseppe Conte's government on Thursday ahead of this week's EU summit.
The discussion focused on the need to give rapid, concrete responses on the use of EU funds to bring about economic recovery after the coronavirus emergency, sources said.
The talks touched on the difficulties that lie ahead in the negotiations on EU aid for the recovery.
Despite these difficulties, there was satisfaction that Italy's position on aid to individual countries has been embraced at the wider EU level.
