The ruling centre-left Democratic Party (PD) on Friday proposed a coronavirus "solidarity contribution" for those earning over 80,000 euros, which will be tax-deductible and go from several hundred euros to tens of thousands of euros for incomes above one million.
The PD said the move was expected to bring in some 1.3 billion euros a year in 2020 and 2021.
The centre-right opposition and the PD's ruling partner, the centrist Italia Viva (IV) party, both came out against what they called a wealth tax.
The PD's main government ally, the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S), also said it was against the tax.
