Carabinieri police from the Sicilian city of Agrigento detained seven people in a major anti-Mafia operation on Wednesday, sources said. Among the people held were Angelo Occhipinti, a 64-year-old who is suspected of being at the helm of the clan in the nearby town of Licata.
A Licata town councillor was also detained and is accused of external involvement in mafia association.
The operation is linked to an operation which uncovered evidence that a company involved in building work in Germany was allegedly being subject to extortion.
It also shed light on allegedly mafia involvement in the slot-machine sector.
