International laws on protecting
refugees must be respected, the spokesman of UNited Nations
chief Antonio Guterres said Monday.
"We don't want to go into Italian laws but Guterres' message
is that international norms on the protection of refugees must
be respected," said Stephane Dujarric.
"Refugees and migrants must be treated with dignity and
respect for their human rights," he said.
He said a letter criticising the Italian government's
proposed fines for migrant rescuers "was sent by one of the
special rapporteurs, figures who play an important role but who
are independent of the UN".
