A witness in the trial of Massimo Bossetti, the man accused of murdering 13-year-old schoolgirl Yara Gambirasio in 2010, testified on Wednesday that she saw Bossetti in his car in the summer of 2010 with a young girl who she said she believes was Gambirasio.

Alma Azzolini said she recalled the episode following Bossetti's arrest in June 2014, after she saw a TV report about the case that showed the cemetery where she said she saw Bossetti in his car with the teenage girl.

Bossetti's defence team on Wednesday said they have evidence that proves Bossetti wasn't where Azzolini said she saw him during the time frame within which she reported seeing him.

Also on Wednesday, Bossetti's mother exercised her right as a relative to remain silent at his trial. The woman, Ester Arzuffi, sat briefly in the witness box after waving and smiling at her son.
