Police on Wednesday arrested an
industry ministry official for abuse of office for asking for
bribes from foreigners wanting their educational qualifications
recognized in Italy.
The 51-year-old allegedly asked up to 1,200 euros to
facilitate the process.
The Romanian embassy reported the official to police after
he tried to obtain money from a Romanian citizen.
The ensuing investigation uncovered at least eight such
episodes, all involving Romanian nationals.
The suspect had the bribes sent to him via money transfer,
asking his victims to destroy their email correspondence.
