Franco Panzironi, formerly the
powerful head of the Rome city trash collection agency AMA, was
convicted Wednesday of nepotism in hiring at the firm and
sentenced to a 3 year, 8 month prison term, judicial sources
said. Three other former senior managers from AMA were convicted
on similar charges of arranging employment for family members at
the agency while four others were acquitted. Panzironi was
arrested previously in connection with the so-called "Capital
Mafia" corruption scandal that rocked Rome earlier this year.
