The use of foreign players in
Italian soccer is "devastating," Italian Soccer Federation
(FIGC) President Carlo Tavecchio told Albanian TV's Agon Channel
Monday.
"Our goal is to try to rejuvenate this soccer system,
launching more youngsters to restrict the devastating use of
foreigners," he said.
Tavecchio is currently serving a FIFA and UEFA ban for
saying there were too many "banana-eating" foreign players in
Italian soccer.
That comment, made in July as he was calling for tighter
restrictions on non-EU footballers in Italian soccer, garnered
headlines worldwide.
The ensuing furore did not stop him being elected one
month later to the helm of Italian soccer, which has been dogged
by repeated episodes of racism in recent years.
