The Cassation Court, Italy's
highest appeal court, on Monday ruled that Salvatore Cuffaro,
Sicily's ex-governor serving a seven-year Mafia-related
sentence, must remain in prison.
The court rejected an application from his lawyer seeking
to commute his jail time into community-service.
No reasons were given for the denial but last year the same
application was rejected by Rome's probation tribunal on the
grounds that Cuffaro had not been cooperative during
investigations.
