Italian Justice Minister Andrea
Orlando on Monday complained of a "cooperation deficit" at the
European Union and international level after many people were
killed in a migrant-boat disaster near Lampedusa. "We await a
strong signal," he added. "A leap forward is needed". Rome has
complained the EU is not doing enough to help Italy police a key
part of its southern border, which thousands of migrants from
North Africa head for every year. Some 400 migrants died in two
boat disasters near Lampedusa in October.
