Girelli have succeeded with ECO 40 to conquer the Wally Cup
Ventotene-Carthage in 39 minutes and 49 seconds less compared to
the time established in 2009 by Andrea Mura with his boat Vento
di Sardegna. Miceli and Girelli in fact reached the port of Sidi
Bou Said on Tuesday at 2 pm in 59': 40'' setting the new Wally
Record in 31 hours and 31 seconds, covering 277 nautical miles.
The two champions sailed from Ventotene to Carthage with the ECO 40, a 40-feet-long ecological and self-sufficient boat built by Miceli, dealing with adverse weather conditions.
Once again, the collaboration between the Tunisian and Italian sailing federations, the sailing race's judges, the Tunisian and Italian sailing clubs involved, the Ventotene sailing club and various sponsors, allowed the initiative's success and efficient cooperation, organizers stressed. They thanked the Italian embassy in Tunisia and the Tunisian embassy in Italy for following with attention all preparations and the completion of the challenge.
"The victory over time of Miceli and Girelli - organizers said - is today, once again, the victory of a beautiful relation between Italy and Tunisia and, in the current pandemic situation, also a small victorious tassel in the joint battle against Covid-19". On Wednesday Eco 40 will head back to Italy.
In Rome the crew will be awarded with the Wally Cup Record Ventotene-Cartagine.
The event is part of the Carthago Dilecta Est , the sailing race organized since 1999 by the Circolo Velico Ventotene. The initiative enjoys the support of several institutional and private Italian and Tunisian sponsors. (ANSAmed)
