The selection was promoted with a public tender by Sprint Sicily, the internationalization unit of the regional councillorship for Productive Businesses, and looked at project proposals for innovative businesses linked to the themes of food, technology, and culture, all with a strong tie to the Sicilian territory, to be created in Piazzetta Sicilia in the Italian Pavilion at Expo.
FabLab Palermo group is an example, a digital fabrication laboratory and base of Palermo's "makers", that answered the announcement Sprint was aiming specifically at leaders in the latest innovations, that which could be defined as 3.0: fab labs, co-working, innovative start-ups, incubators, young businesses and women-run businesses.
The Going to Expo group brings together: "makers" tied to technology and digital innovation, a group led by FabLab Palermo with MakeInSal Catania FabLab and Dharma Digilab; Pmo Coworking and CaravanSerai Palermo, partners in co-working, spaces of collaboration and idea and work sharing, in the mold of the sharing economy; Insight srl and Kaptiva, two start-ups that present innovative apps aimed at improving accessibility in the tourism and museum sectors and at the simplification of restaurant reservation systems; two projects tied to street food as a vehicle of Sicilian tourism and cultural promotion, StrEat Palermo which produces tourist itineraries tied to the discovery of the city through a local approach with street food, and Crocchè, Palermo's street food portal, a unique example of communication tied to new themes of social eating and the first to take up the now enormously popular theme of street food; and Ensemble Thymòs which will propose for Expo a narration of Sicilian history and culture through theatre and musical performances.
