Netanyahu accuses Abbas of lying and incitement

Hamas calls 'Day of Rage' for tomorrow

15 October, 19:47

(ANSAmed) - TEL AVIV, OCTOBER 15 - Israeli prime minister Benyamin Netanyahu on Thursday accused Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas of lying, thereby fanning the flames of violence between the two populations. He said that Abbas ''lies and continues to incite. The boy is not dead. He is alive and not innocent; he tried to kill.

Palestinians refuse to tell the truth'' in reference to a Palestinian attacker who was said to have been ''executed''. The Israeli foreign ministry has released a number of photos showing the 13-year-old Ahmed Manasra - accused of trying to kill an Israeli peer in recent days in Jerusalem - alive and in the hospital. Abbas on Wednesday evening had said that the boy had been ''executed'' by Israel. ''We expect our friends not to build false symmetries between Israeli citizens and those that stab them to death,'' Netanyahu said in a press conference on the attacks in Israel in recent days. A few hours before, Hamas had in turn proclaimed a 'Day of Rage' in the West Bank and East Jerusalem beginning on Friday after the weekly communal prayer. The call was for Palestinians to join together and face up to the Israeli army in mass to ''punish it for its crimes''. Palestinian Liberation Organization leader Saeb Erekat instead criticized the fact that ''due to an Israeli request'', the Quartet had not gone through with a scheduled visit on Monday. In a letter sent to EU Special Representative for the Peace Process Fernando Gentilini, Erekat said that the decision ''sends the problematic message that the international community accepts the Israeli requests not to intervene, and thus signaling that it accepts the Israeli escalation.'' In the letter, which ANSA has a copy of, Erekat also underscored that the situation on the ground requires ''immediate attention from the international community.'' (ANSAmed).
