(ANSAmed) - ROME, NOVEMBER 28 - In order to control Europe-bound migration flows from crisis-hit areas, ''it is not possible just to raise a wall, and cooperation actions are not enough: a long-term strategy is necessary'' - uniting cooperation with countries facing difficulties with the reconstruction of countries ''near total collapse'', Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni said on Friday.

Gentiloni was addressing a joint press conference in Rome with German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on the sidelines of the conference to present the Khartoum process on immigration from eastern Africa.

Gentiloni and Steinmeier agreed that countries of transit for migrants travelling to Europe ''need humanitarian action on the ground''.

As far as countries at war are concerned, the ''mother of all problems'', it is important to re-launch diplomatic action. In this regard, Gentiloni said, the stabilization of Libya is fundamental.

It is a matter of ''fighting the causes behind the mass exodus'' from countries in crisis and therefore ''we will try to realize in Libya what we are already doing in Somalia''.

The two foreign ministers agreed that the Khartoum process, born at the initiative of the Italian EU presidency - which involves EU member countries, as well as countries of transit in North Africa and those in eastern Africa and Horn of Africa - is a long-term strategic effort to seek to confront the root of the immigration problem by combining diverse political actions.(ANSAmed)
