ADANA - At least 5,030 people have died as a result of a devastating series of earthquakes that began on Monday near the border between southern Turkey and northern Syria. At least 3,432 deaths were confirmed in southern Turkey, Anadolu reported the Turkish AFAD emergency and disaster services as stating.
Across the border, at least 1,598 people are confirmed dead, according to NGOs.
At least 21,103 people have been injured in Turkey.
Turkish vice president Fuat Oktay was quoted by state-controlled TRT as saying that over 8,000 people had been rescued in Turkey and that over the night there were 312 aftershocks and seismic activity remains high in the southern part of the country.
