The high profile trial of members of the Jordan Engineers Association ended with the judges handing various sentences to 12 men to hard labour, including 4 in absentia, amid strong condemnation from supporters and activists.
Charges presented by state security prosecutor include manufacturing of weapons to use them in an illegal manner, taking actions that jeoprodize public order and endangering the society as well as recruiting men to join militant groups.
Supporters of the activists held a demonstration outside the court and chanted slogans calling for their freedom. One activist held a slogan saying "All Jordan with the resistence." The engineers association is one of the most influential trade unions in the kingdom and considered a strong supporter for resistance groups in the Palestinian territories.
Jordan has signed a peace treaty with Israel and ever since criminalize any activity that is considered offensive to its security or bilateral ties.
Activists condemned the trial as political and called for authorities to release the men, but the pro-west authorities are expected to withhold the sentence.(ANSAmed).
