The commissioner claimed that this is the only way to "protect the system" and that the number of repatriations must therefore increase.
The European Commission on Tuesday presented a strategy to increase the number of repatriations.
Mari Juritsch, EU coordinator for repatriations, said during the presentation that this was a complicated matter and that repatriations are not yet see as a shared responsibility in the bloc in its entirety, leading to problems.
The strategy presented will focus on four pillars: better coordination between the European Commission and member states, speeding up of the process, assistance to countries of origin, and digitalisation of the procedure.
Juritsch stressed that a single, unified EU-wide system for repatriation was needed. (ANSAmed).
