The leader of the host country, Pedro Sanchez, welcomed the leaders of the EU countries of the Mediterranean.
Not in attendance due to illness was Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni. Filling in for her at the sessions will be deputy prime minister and foreign affairs minister Antonio Tajani, who is expected to arrive in the afternoon. The leaders of the countries in southern Europe will then move to Ciudad de la Luz, where the two sessions of the summit will be held.
The 'Med Group' includes Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain and was informally established in 2013.
The summit is being held ahead of a European Council meeting slated for next week and from which a joint statement is expected to be released on support for Ukraine, economic and social issues, policies for growth and stability, joint investments in line with Next Generation EU to protect families and enterprises from high energy prices, as well as on defence challenges and energy and digital transitions.(ANSAmed).
