The EU supports Tunisian virtuous path project at Metline

Near Bizerte, as part of the 'For Our Planet' campaign

02 December, 17:57

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, 2 DECEMBER - The municipality of Metline, in the north-west of Tunisia, will launch an urban waste sorting project thanks to an agreement, signed on 30 November, with the Tunisian association Recyclage and the Metline Bizerte Scouts. The project was supported by the European Union as part of its "For Our Planet" campaign. This is a campaign aimed at local entities, this time for those in Cap Zebib, to safeguard the environment by engaging students and, for the first time, the scouts to raise awareness on the importance of respecting nature.

Eleven recycling trash cans were placed at the school and at the Cap Zebib beach, during an event organized by Metline on 30 November by the EU delegation to Tunisia, in the presence of EU Ambassador to Tunisia, Marcus Cornaro. The event is part of a series of awareness-raising actions on the need to maintain cleanliness and to safeguard nature, these actions were called the EU Beach Clean-Up. During the event, a theater show on the environment was presented and a training session on recycling- organized by the Tunisie Recyclage Organization was offered to students.

These actions are aimed at supporting and engaging Tunisian entities, in particular local ones (the municipality, scouts and students) to act to safeguard the environment. One area to protect in particular is the region of Cap Zebib, known for its natural and magical landscape, a wild area rich of marine biodiversity. Located on the northern coast of Tunisia, Cap Zebib closes on the east the bay of Bizerte. This is the area where the Cani islands are located, one of the most interesting scuba diving sites in the Mediterranean. Despite its rich marine biodiversity and its ecological potential, the Cap Zebib area has not been classified for protection according to the IMMA (Important Marine Mammal Areas) criteria. "It was proposed as an important area for marine mammals but this proposal was not accepted due to the lack of regular monitoring data on dolphin distribution [in that area]", explained Mehdi Aissi, responsible for the WWF-North Africa (the World Wildlife Fund) maritime program.

The EU campaign "For Our Planet" is a joint initiative with the European Commission and the European External Action Service (SEAE) to gain support for nature and support action for climate for the coming years.
