More people went missing on the route than the previous year as well: 629 compared with 597, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The IOM cited these figures in a tweet and underscored that, from August 1 to August 7, some 864 migrants had been "rescued or intercepted" at sea and taken back to Libya.
IOM calculated that 20,257 migrants have been taken back to Libya this year, including 711 minors and 1,336 women, compared with 11,891 people the entire previous year. (ANSAmed).
