Through November 7, experts will debate the potential of water resources, the environmental impact of their exploitation, transference of non-conventional water supply know-how and technology, water management and sustainability. Water Resources Minister Hadi Hinshir stressed the need to preserve and protect the country's scarce water supplies. Projects on the table include using fossil water from the Murzuq basin in the Sahara desert, and setting up desalination plants along the coast. The latter are expensive and damaging to the environment, because they use up a lot of energy and can wreak havoc in the marine ecology, experts said.
The conference has a section on water treatment and purification. Attendees will discuss a bacteria that is a marker for pollution, and which has shown up in water bottled in the city of Benghazi.
The event also includes an exhibition space for machinery, new technologies and publications. It is intended to educate the public on the importance of water conservation, and will be attended by specialized institutions and companies, some of them foreign. (ANSAmed).
