Researchers of the Institute for sustainable protection of plants of the CNR in Bari presented the findings at the second European conference on Xylella fastidiosa, organized by the European Food Safety Authority in Ajaccio. The study confirms the conclusions that in 2017 had allowed the exception to the EU rules for three vine varieties (Negroamaro, Primitivo, Cabernet Sauvignon).
Vine is susceptible to infection by Xylella fastidiosa. In California, the bacterium associated 'Pierce disease' cost wine producers 100 million dollars per year. For that reason, the EU rules require a hot water treatment before the marketing of the plants, and their parts, which come from infected areas in Europe. The new data on the Xylella strain established in Apulia could allow the 'liberation' of the 27 varieties from the mandatory thermotherapy treatment.(ANSAmed).
