RABAT - After a three-year pause, the first and only international art fair dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, 1-54, will be back in Marrakech. From Feb. 9 to 12, 54 African nations will be exhibiting highlights of contemporary art on the continent.
Over 20 galleries from five continents will be gathering in the halls of Marrakech's iconic Mamounia hotel. Paintings, sculptures and installations made by 60 artists will be exhibited.
"With three editions per year, in London, New York, and Marrakech, and a pop-up fair in Paris, the name of the fair, 1-54, draws reference to the fifty-four countries that constitute the African continent," states its website, adding that, "1-54, founded by Touria El Glaoui, has held annual editions in London since 2013, New York since 2015, and Marrakech since 2018. 1-54 spearheaded the ascent of contemporary African art on the international art market and became a leading voice." Originally from Marrakech, El Glaoui worked to ensure that this year's edition would be held in Marrakech for its 10-year anniversary. The Museum of Contemporary African Art Al Maaden and the art cafe of Hassan Hajjaj, known as the "Andy Warhol of Morocco", will be taking part.
