Tunisia launches platform on national migration data

To provide impartial statistics on undocumented migration

17 February, 11:55

(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, FEB 17 - The National Migration Observatory (ONM) on Thursday announced the launch of a platform relating to the national information system on migration in Tunisia, in partnership with the the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and with financial support from the European Union, as reported by the TAP news agency.

During a seminar held in Tunis, OMN Director General Ahlem Hammami said this platform could be accessed through the «migradata» link available on the official website of the observatory.

The aim is to provide accurate statistics and unbiased figures on migration as well as unify stakeholders' working tools in the sector so as to increase coordination and improve data processing and analysis, she added.

She noted that the project is part of implementing the second phase of the Governance and Strategy Programme (ProGress) Migration Tunisia, carried out by the ICMPD and is funded by the EU.

The absence of accurate figures and conflicting data pushed the Observatory to address the issue in a bid to set up a comprehensive national system on migration while referring to the Institute National Statistics Office and administrative registers of the various stakeholders, namely the Ministry of the Interior, the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Higher Education and Scientific Research Ministry, Hammami affirmed.

To feed the platform's content, the Observatory signed a series of agreements, with various data-producing institutions including the National Employment and Independent Work Agency (ANETI), the General Directorate of Recruitment Abroad, the Tunisian Agency of Technical Cooperation (ATCT) and the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT).

The ONM director stressed that the outcomes of the national survey on international migration, carried out in 2021, will also be used.

Head of the "ProGress" project Wahiba Ben Ameur pointed out that the new information system on migration will be used to devise clear policies based on scientific data and reliable figures which will ensure better management of the migration issue, TAP reported. (ANSAmed).
