(ANSAmed) - TUNIS, APRIL 1 - Tunisia registered another 32
cases of coronavirus infections on Wednesday, bringing the total
of confirmed cases in the country to 393, with 10 official
deaths, said the Tunisian health ministry in a statement.
Meanwhile, following the meeting of the country's national security council, the Tunisian presidency extended the general quarantine measures for two more weeks.
The measures require everyone, except for some categories of workers, to stay at home, and to go out only for essential needs such as grocery shopping or medical care.
A national curfew currently in effect from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. will also remain.
The extension of the general quarantine measures starts on April 5.
Tunisian President Kais Saied called for stricter implementation of the measures decided on and a change in method to avoid the shortcomings of the previous period.
He highlighted the need to overcome all obstacles, to make greater efforts to bring food to all the regions, and to meet the legitimate needs of vulnerable social groups.
Meanwhile, Tunisian Prime Minister Elyes Fakhfakh held a ministerial council on Wednesday focusing on ways to disburse the announced social aid to the neediest families and special measures for workers and businesses for facing the coronavirus emergency, and he promised additional related measures.
He said the government, through the Tunisian social security administration, will provide 60,000 packages of food products delivered directly to the homes of beneficiaries starting Friday, April 3, until the end of the month of Ramadan.
"A decision was also made to open a school in each city for receiving aid and delivering it to needy families, in collaboration with civil society, to shorten aid distribution times and to respect the measures of the general quarantine," Fakhfakh said.
In recent days, tensions broke out in some working-class neighbourhoods due to the higher volume of requests for social assistance on the part of groups of low-income citizens.(ANSAmed).
