(ANSAmed) - ROME, FEBRUARY 16 - Between January 2014 and
November 2016 nearly 500,000 migrants arrived on Italian shores
following rescue operations at sea, and of those, just under
50,000 were unaccompanied minors, according to a report by
Migrantes Foundation presented in Turin on Thursday.
The report, titled "The Right to Asylum: Vulnerable child refugees without a voice", said that in 2016 alone, more than 24,000 unaccompanied foreign minors arrived in southern Italy, with the percentage of unaccompanied minors reaching 14% of all migrant arrivals in 2016, compared to an average of 9% between 2012 and 2015.
Asylum requests are also up, from 306 in 2010 to 2,557 in 2015, it said.
In the first eight months of 2016 there were 3,181 new asylum applications, double that of the same period in 2015.(ANSAmed).
