In 1967, Israel occupied the remaining 22% of historic Palestine: the West Bank and Gaza (as well as large sections of Syria and Egypt).

(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS/NEW YORK - The European Parliament has given broad support to a resolution endorsed by almost all political parties that supports ''in principle'' a recognition of Palestinian statehood on the basis of 1967 borders, backs the 'two-state solution' and calls for a resumption of peace talks. The resolution was approved with 498 votes in favor, 88 against and 111 abstentions. Resounding applause was heard in a large section of the parliamentary chamber on the announcement of the results, which many observers have called ''historical''.
The resolution is a joint text drafted by centre-right EPP, the centre-left S&D, the Liberal Alde group, European United Left (GUE) and the Greens, and backed by several members of the Five-Star Movement as well, including Massimo Castaldo and Ignazio Corrao.
The UN Security Council's draft resolution on the recognition of Palestinian statehood that should soon be presented as a blueprint is the French version, while an earlier one presented by Jordan has been scrapped. The text is based on the French draft resolution with some ''observations by the Palestinian Authority (PA)''.
It states that ''within 24 months of the adoption of the resolution a peaceful, just and lasting solution must be found that satisfies the vision of two independent states''UN sources say that the US has yet to agree to the text and that this may lead to voting being postponed, in order to hold further negotiations within the Security Council.
