In an attempt to calm the situation, which is starting to take on shades of urban guerrilla warfare, the governor of the North Aegean and the mayors of Chios, Western Lesbos, and Mitilene convened on Thursday afternoon in Athens for a meeting with the government. The revolt broke out when hundreds of riot police were sent to the islands of Lesbos and Chios to protect construction sites where the hotspots are being built.
Police used tear gas, water cannons, and smoke bombs against demonstrators.
Some eyewitnesses and an Italian worker employed with an NGO on Lesbos said among the demonstrators are also members of the far right Golden Dawn party and groups from the far left.
The same sources said a group of demonstrators raided a hotel on Wednesday evening where some of the police sent from Athens were staying.
Local media sources said there was an attack on the military base in Kyriazis, where other police officers were staying.
