(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, JANUARY 13 - According to
preliminary estimates, some 330,000 irregular crossings of the
European Union's external borders were registered in 2022, the
highest figure reported since 2016, up 64% compared to the
previous year, EU border agency Frontex said on Friday. After a
record low reported during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, a
strong increase in irregular entries was recorded in 2022 for
the second consecutive year, the agency said. Syrians, Afghans
and Tunisians represented together 47% of nationalities in 2022.
The number of Syrians nearly doubled, reaching 94,000 units, the
report added.
The number of cases registered in the central Mediterranean,
compared to 2021, increased by over half, exceeding 100,000
cases. "Egyptians, Tunisians and Bangladeshis represented the
first three nationalities in a year with the highest number of
arrivals in this region from Libya since 2017 and the most
significant number of arrivals from Tunisia in recent history",
explained the European agency.(ANSAmed).
