Centre-left opposition Democratic
Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein on Thursday accused other parties
of torpedoing her scheduled May 23 European election TV debate
with Premier and ruling rightwing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party
leader Giorgia Meloni, after it was scrapped on equal time
concerns.
Schlein reacted to state broadcaster Rai's decision to pull the
plug on the event by accusing the four parties who failed to
endorse it of wanting to "deny a face-off between me and Meloni.
"There are those who prefer to give up an opportunity for a
prime-time debate in order to deny it to the two women who lead
Italy's two leading parties", she said on the sidelines of an
election appointment in Cesano Boscone in the Milan area.
She went on: "We will not stop, we will continue this tour of
100 stages for the Europe we want, at this point we will add a
few more stages, to talk about the issues of health, work and
the minimum wage, which are our priorities".
