Soccer: Rossi 'to be called up for Italy fitness tests'

Soccer: Rossi 'to be called up for Italy fitness tests' (ANSA) - Rome, April 4 - Giuseppe Rossi will be among the players Italy coach Cesare Prandelli calls up for pre-World Cup fitness tests this month, even though the forward has not yet returned to action for Fiorentina after a knee injury, ANSA sources said Friday.

Prandelli said he would wait as long as possible for Rossi to regain fitness when he suffered the injury in January. The 27-year-old was Serie A's top scorer at the time with 14 goals and remains in joint-fourth place in this season's striker standings even though he has been sidelined for three months. The sources said Parma's Antonio Cassano may also be invited to the fitness tests on April 14 and 15.

Prandelli has not used Cassano since the 31-year-old helped Italy come second at Euro 2012, but he is in good form and in the running for a place in his World Cup squad.

Another in-form veteran, 37-year-old AS Roma captain Francesco Totti, will not be at the fitness tests, the sources said.

They added, however, that this does not mean there is no chance of Totti, a part of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning team, being recalled for this summer's tournament in Brazil.
