Russia reduces troop numbers near Ukraine

Situation has 'calmed down'

Russia reduces troop numbers near Ukraine (ANSA) - Kiev, March 31 - Ukraine defense official Major-General Oleksandr Rozmaznin reported Monday that Russian soldiers deployed on the Ukraine-Russia border have "decreased".

Rozmaznin did not provide any quantitative numbers on troop headcount and its downsizing, but commented that the situation has "calmed down", according to BBC.

The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed the reports, saying a battalion of an artillery brigade had withdrawn from the area and returned to base after military exercises.

The recent Russian military movement on Ukraine's southern and eastern borders along with the country's annexation of Crimea has caused some to worry of a possible Russian military invasion into Ukraine territory.
