Agreement signed for Aqaba MIS center, first in Middle East (ANSA) - Aqaba, March 31 - In an unprecedented step aimed at putting the city of Aqaba on the regional and global medical-tourism map, the Al Maabar Aqaba Real Estate Development Company, the master developer of Marsa Zayed - the largest mega mixed-use development project in the region - recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with MIS Solutions Inc. to establish a Minimally Invasive Surgical (MIS) center at Marsa Zayed. The center will be the first of its kind in the Middle East.

The MoU was signed by the CEO of Al Maabar Aqaba, Emad Kilani, and the Managing Director of MIS Solutions Inc., Mohammed Al-Turk, in the presence of the ASEZA Chief Commissioner, Dr. Kamel Mahadin.

The MoU will serve to help streamline the efforts of both parties in conducting all necessary studies and allocating all necessary investments required to bring the MIS center to life.

Following the conclusion of these studies in the coming months, an agreement will be signed to establish a company responsible for overseeing the project.

The center will host world-class surgeons to institutionalize best practices as well as knowledge transfer to local and regional physicians. The goal is to develop a strong relationship with a western academic partner and to this end work has started with the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization to develop a strategic partnership.

The center will be linked to a network of referral clinics in key cities around the region, which will serve to diagnose and refer patients to the MIS center in Aqaba. The American Hospital Management Company, an establishment with global expertise and a successful track record of diversified international hospital management and administration, has been chosen to manage the center in order to ensure the efficiency and efficacy of its operations.

Commenting on the agreement, HE Yousef Al Nowais, Managing Director of Al Maabar International, said: "we are extremely proud of the quality and value this partnership will bring to the Marsa Zayed project. With its strategic location in Aqaba, the MIS center will attract patients from around the globe, where they will receive the world's most advanced care and treatment at a first-rate facility, with the added benefit of the center's idyllic and therapeutic coastal setting".

Al Nowais continued, adding that: "strategic partnerships like this one help to further realize our vision of developing landmark destinations that provide real, sustainable economic benefits for the host countries and their communities, creating opportunities for a promising future".

Also speaking on this occasion, Al Maabar Aqaba CEO Emad Kilani said: "we are very pleased to establish this pivotal partnership with MIS Solutions Inc., which will add significant value to Aqaba and Jordan as a whole, elevating the kingdom's status as a top medical tourism destination. "This state-of-the-art MIS center - part of the second phase of the Marsa Zayed development - will serve not only to build upon Jordan's attractiveness for medical tourism, but will create valuable employment opportunities for local medical professionals, to the benefit of the entire kingdom". Kilani added that by building this landmark center at the strategically located Marsa Zayed development, patients will benefit not only from the world's most advanced medical treatments and facilities, but will be able to recuperate alongside Aqaba's picturesque coastline. The center will also boast luxury residential suites, managed by a leading hotel operator, for exceptional post-op care.

"This MIS center will be the first of its kind in the region, and is slated to offer comprehensive and integrated MIS procedures," said Mohammed Al-Turk, the Managing Director of MIS Solutions Inc. "The Marsa Zayed project provides an ideal location for such a center, as it will guarantee a unique wellness experience for patients. We are eager to move forward with this fruitful partnership, building upon Al Maabar's demonstrated expertise in real estate development and the construction of sustainable communities that exist in harmony with the local heritage".

Inspired by the legacy of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Marsa Zayed, a 3.2 million-square-meter development, is the largest mega mixed-use development project envisioned in the region. Marsa Zayed promises to transform the city of Aqaba into a bustling center of commerce, tourism and living. In addition to an eclectic blend of residential, commercial, tourism and retail properties and facilities, the project will include the development of two kilometers of prime waterfront, complete with a modern cruise ship terminal and other marine facilities.

The project, which is being developed by Abu Dhabi-based developer Al Maabar, is currently in its first phase of development, which comprises two major components: Al Raha Village, a serene residential neighborhood at the southern edge of Marsa Zayed set to include more than 500 residential units, each equipped with modern amenities and access to an array of idyllic community facilities; and Sheikh Zayed Masjid, a large, ornate mosque on the northern edge of the property, which is expected to be completed later this year. Marsa Zayed's innovative development concept and world-class architecture and design have already been honored at the Arabian Property Awards for two consecutive years, in both 2012 and 2013.
