Spread closes steady on 178 points (ANSA) - Milan, March 20 - The spread between Italian and German 10-year bonds was steady at a four-year low of 178 points with a yield of 3.42% Thursday amid continued optimism new Premier Matteo Renzi can deliver long-awaited structural reforms.

The yield spread, the premium investors pay to hold Italian paper rather than ultra-safe AAA-rated Bunds, is a key measure of investor confidence in the Italian economy and the government's ability to pay down Italy's huge debt.

The Milan bourse was the top gainer in a day of slight ups and downs across Europe.

The Mibtel closed 0.56% up amid calm trading.

London was 0.32% down, Frankfurt 0.20% up, Paris 0.47% up, Madrid 0.11% down and Athens 0.08% down.
