Greenpeace urges Italy to act on illegal forest cutting

Appeal made for Rome to enforce European laws

Greenpeace urges Italy to act on illegal forest cutting (ANSA) - Rome, March 20 - Italy must act on European regulations banning the import of wood products derived from illegal forestry, Greenpeace said Thursday.

The appeal from the Italian chapter of the environmental group came on the eve of the United Nations-sanctioned International Day of Forests.

"Italy must urgently adopt the European norms that since March 2013 have banned the import of wood and wood products derived from illegal cuttings", said Chiara Campione, who heads the forest campaign of Greenpeace Italia. Failure to do so "makes Italian consumers who buy an item of furniture or parquet responsible, without knowing, for the destruction of the green lungs of the planet", she added.
