Vatican says pope had no plans to meet actor Russell Crowe (ANSA) - Vatican City, March 18 - Although Pope Francis has presented a common-man image, with his love of soccer, simple lifestyle, and affinity for social media, his friendly touch won't extend to Hollywood actor Russell Crowe, at least for now.

While American celebrity magazine Variety reported that Crowe has been lobbying for a meeting with the pontiff, Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said Tuesday that it was not about to happen.

"The meeting has never been in the (pope's) program," and no availability was scheduled for Crowe, who has been promoting his new film on the Old Testament hero Noah.

Variety had suggested that a meeting between the star of such Hollywood blockbusters as Gladiator was arranged, then cancelled at the last minute.

It also reported that Crowe has been waging a "campaign of persuasion" via his Twitter account, inviting the pope to see the film.

Other media in the United States are reporting that the film's distributor, Paramount Pictures, is making extra efforts to assure potential audiences that film is not blasphemous.
