Law encouraging renters to rat on landlords thrown out

Offered low rent if owners guilty of cheating taxman

Law encouraging renters to rat on landlords thrown out (ANSA) - Rome, March 14 - The Constitutional Court on Friday overturned a law that encouraged renters to report landlords who were leasing houses and apartments without a contract. The law, which was introduced in 2011, allowed renters to stay in their home at a drastically reduced rate if it could be proved that the landlord was evading taxes by not offering tenants a proper lease. Renting without a contract is very common in Italy, allowing both renters and landlords to save money by dodging the taxman. But with that renters are given little legal recourse if the landlord does not provide suitable accommodations that would otherwise be stipulated in a lease.
