No new hires for indebted public administration, says bill (ANSA) - Rome, March 13 - Public authorities that delay in repaying business for services will be blocked from hiring new staff, according to a draft government proposal made known on Thursday. The measure gives the public administration a maximum of 60 days in 2014 and 30 days from 2015 to pay its bills, after which it will not be able to "hire staff on any level, under any kind of contract," including freelancers. The national health authority would be exempt from the provision.

Under the proposal, public authorities will also be required to submit information concerning their outstanding debt with businesses by the middle of each month for overall monitoring. The measures are part of an ongoing push by government to get the public administration to pay off its massive debt to help kickstart the country's struggling economy.
