CGIL trade union opens to labor contract negotiations

Mulls 'single contract' change, but flex agreements must go

CGIL trade union opens to labor contract negotiations (see related) (ANSA) - Turin, March 7 - The leader of the CGIL trade confederation said she would discuss changes to the so-called "single contract" contract, an employment agreement considered by companies to be inflexible and expensive compared to those used in more competitive economies, providing legislators scrap other forms of flexible agreements introduced in recent years to cut the costs of labor.

"If temp contracts are scrapped, we will a minute later be available to discuss the single contract. If the idea is to add another form of employment contract to the pile, we say the supermarket shelf is already full," said Susanna Camusso, who heads Italy's largest trade confederation, at a Turin congress on Friday. Italian companies have often slammed the allegedly rigid labor legislation in Italy, saying it makes it difficult for a company to compete internationally due to the high costs, and that it makes them inflexible in times of recession with the cost of laying off workers being comparatively high.
