Twenty arrested in 'Ndrangheta cocaine sweep
Drug arrived in containers from Nicaragua06 March, 13:04
The drug, concealed in containers arriving in various Italian ports, was allegedly destined for criminal organisations linked to the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta crime syndicate operating in the southern regions of Puglia and Calabria. The accused could face charges ranging from drug trafficking to property crimes. 'Ndrangheta has replaced Sicily's Cosa Nostra as Italy's richest and most powerful mafia, thanks to its domination of the European cocaine trade.
It has invested its drug profits in the legitimate economy of central and northern Italy.
Police also arrested a group of Romanian nationals linked to a crime syndicate who allegedly stole copper and building materials and carried out house robberies in the Castelli Romani area south of Rome.
