Italy approves 135 mln euros heritage works funds for South (ANSA) - Rome, March 6 - Italy has launched a new 135 million euro-heritage sites renovation project for Southern Italy, adding to the 222 million euros that were funnelled to the sector some six months ago, according to a new decree that was signed on Thursday by Culture Minister Dario Franceschini.

The new financing will cover the cost of some 46 new restoration projects in the regions of Campania, Calabria, Puglia and Sicily, all of which can be immediately executed according to the decree.

The new funds follow in the wake of the 222 million euros earmarked in September 2013 for some 87 similar projects that are currently being worked on, according to ministry sources. "This is the most important action that has been carried out in recent years on Southern Italy's cultural heritage", Franceschini said.
